Pool Volume Calculator

Calculate swimming pool water volume in gallons, liters, and cubic feet for chemical dosing and pump sizing.

Pool Volume Estimator

Calculate swimming pool capacity in gallons, liters, and cubic feet

How Pool Volume Calculator Works

Rectangular: Volume Gallons = Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.48; Circular: Radius² × π × Depth × 7.48

Swimming pool water volume is calculated by multiplying pool surface area in square feet by the average water depth, then multiplying by 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. Average depth is found by adding the shallow end depth to the deep end depth and dividing by 2.

Variable Breakdown

L
LengthTotal length of the pool in feet
W
WidthTotal width or diameter of the pool in feet
D_shallow
Shallow DepthWater depth at the shallow end in feet
D_deep
Deep End DepthWater depth at the deepest point in feet

Example Calculation

Rectangular Inground Pool Volume

A 16 by 32 foot rectangular pool with a shallow depth of 3.5 feet and a deep end of 8.5 feet.

  1. Average depth = 3.5 + 8.5 ÷ 2 = 6.0 feet
  2. Surface area = 16 × 32 = 512 square feet
  3. Cubic volume = 512 × 6.0 = 3,072 cubic feet
  4. Water capacity = 3,072 × 7.48 = 22,982 gallons
Result:Pool holds approximately 22,982 US gallons or 87,000 liters of water

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate pool volume with a sloped bottom?
Add the shallow end depth to the deep end depth and divide by 2 to determine average depth. Multiply pool length by width by average depth by 7.48 to find total gallons.
Why is knowing pool water volume essential?
Correct pool volume is critical for accurate chemical dosing including chlorine, algaecides, and salt, as well as choosing the right pool pump and sand filter size.
How many gallons are in a 15 by 30 foot pool?
A 15 by 30 foot pool with an average depth of 5 feet holds approximately 16,830 gallons of water.
How much does pool water weigh?
Water weighs approximately 8.34 pounds per US gallon or 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. A 20,000 gallon pool holds approximately 166,800 pounds 83.4 tons of water.
