How Asphalt Calculator Works

Tons = Length ft × Width ft × Depth inches / 160

A standard compacted ton of hot-mix asphalt covers approximately 80 square feet at 2 inches thick, or 160 square feet at 1 inch thick. Dividing Length × Width × Depth in inches by 160 yields the total tons required incorporating standard 145 lbs per cubic foot density.

Example Calculation

Two-Car Asphalt Driveway

A driveway measuring 40 feet long by 20 feet wide paved with 2.5 inches of hot-mix asphalt.

  1. Calculate area: 40 ft × 20 ft = 800 sq ft.
  2. Apply asphalt formula: 800 sq ft × 2.5 in ÷ 160 = 12.5 tons.
  3. Add 10% safety margin: 12.5 × 1.10 = 13.75 tons.
  4. Estimate cost at $100 per ton: 13.75 × $100 = $1375.
Result:13.75 Tons with 10% compaction reserve

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a residential asphalt driveway be?
Residential driveways typically require a 2 to 3-inch layer of compacted hot-mix asphalt placed over a 6 to 8-inch compacted gravel base.
How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?
One ton of asphalt covers approximately 80 square feet at 2 inches thick, 53 square feet at 3 inches thick, and 40 square feet at 4 inches thick.
How much does a ton of asphalt cost?
Hot-mix asphalt generally costs between $80 and $125 per ton for materials alone. Full professional installation typically ranges from $3 to $7 per square foot.
Why should I add extra percentage for asphalt paving?
Contractors routinely add 5% to 10% safety margin for compaction variations, irregular subgrade depth, and edges.
How long should you wait to drive on new asphalt?
Wait at least 48 to 72 hours before parking passenger cars on newly laid asphalt, and up to 5 days in hot summer weather.
